Laser surgery

Benefits for Pets

Veterinary laser surgery provides the same benefits to pets that human patients have enjoyed for over thirty years: less pain, less bleeding, less infection, less swelling and discomfort after surgery, and the ability to resume normal activities sooner.

The Aesculight veterinary laser can perform a wide variety of surgical procedures on cats, dogs, horses, birds, and other animals (although our practice only accomodates dogs and cats at this time). It can be used to make unique bloodless laser incision, as well as to erase unhealthy tissue (e.g. tumors) without excessive loss of blood typical of conventional scalpel based surgery. The laser ablation is so precise that it can selectively remove only a few cells at a time, and the laser beam seals nerve endings, so patients are much more comfortable after treatment. The laser beam kills any bacteria in its path, and also seals lymph nodes, resulting in less post operative swelling and infection.

If you haven't heard about laser surgery, prepare to be amazed.  Lasers can be used to erase, or "ablate", tissue, ranging from the aggressive vaporization of entire tumors to the delicate, precise removal of skin layers as thin as 0.1 millimeters.  Laser energy seals small blood vessels as it cuts.  This sealing action helps pets recover more quickly and provides a clear, dry surgical field for the surgeon, allowing the surgeon to perform procedures more effectively in less time.  Shorter procedures shorten anesthesia time, reducing the risks of anesthesia.  Laser surgery automatically seals nerve endings.  Without a "raw" severed nerve end, the patient feels less pain after surgery.  A third sealing action provided by laser energy is to the lymphatic vessels, resulting in less tissue trauma and post-operative swelling. That all translates to more effective surgery, less pain and a faster recovery time. When pets recover quickly, they get to go home faster, making owners and veterinarians happy.

Procedures that we use the laser for include:

  • spay surgery
  • neuter surgery
  • declaw surgery
  • mass removals
  • ear surgeries
  • oral surgeries
  • and many more

Please rest assured that we do not depend on the laser to alleviate all pain during and after surgery.  Appropriate pain control medications are always administered before each surgery and are dispensed with the patient after surgery when indicated!
